THE HISTORY BEHIND THE PRETORIA SKOU / SHOW
Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius and chose a spot on the banks of the Apies river (Afrikaans for "Monkeys river") to be the new capital of the South African Republic.
The first Pretoria Skou / Show was held in 1939. The Original Pretoria Skou / Show was an annual event that began as an agricultural show and grew to include arts, entertainment, education and exhibitions over the years. The event saw various name changes. The Record Newspaper reported on June 25, 2014 that The Pretoria Skou / Show as it was known for decades, will now be called the Jacaranda Agricultural Show. The name also changed briefly to Tshwane Show before settling on The Spring Show. It is sad to think that one of the country's best and biggest agricultural shows died a certain death. I Have tried to google when the last Pretoria Skou / Show took place but the details are vague.
Even though the Pretoria Skou / Show used to be "THE" Flagship event in the PRETORIA REGION, the area became a HIGH RISK AREA for HIJACKING and THEFT.
Enough reason to be sad about what used to be.
